Bootcamp for Brain Training
This is the perfect time of year to focus on spending more time outside and boost our energy levels for the longer warmer days and brighter months. We all strive to be the best version of ourselves so we look better, feel better, are more purposeful, productive and optimistic. That in turn makes us better company too!
But it’s not just about the body, we can also do our brain a few favours. Brain tissue in humans starts to reduce from the third decade onwards. This isn’t the most jolly thought but it is a fact. And with the vast costs associated with geriatric care and an ageing population, there are more and more studies worldwide into stalling or even reversing this process. And one conclusion that has been drawn after much laboratory testing is that outdoor aerobic training is one such effective method of keeping our minds sharp.
A study in the Journals of “Gerontology titled “Aerobic Fitness Reduces Brain Tissue Loss in Aging Humans” . Where there was a lack of aerobic fitness there was a more pronounced decline in the frontal, parietal and temporal cortices. However, the losses in these areas were substantially reduced as a function of cardiovascular fitness.
So what we can take from this is that aerobic activities are not just good for our heart, lungs and general conditioning, but it keeps the brain in shape too. And as the years go by, this takes on ever increasing importance.
